Watched Van Helsing last night, and I was disappointed with it. Firslty I think they where trying to do too much in one film. The idea of combining Dracula, Frankenstein, Dr Jekyll and Werewolves is flawed unless you are doing a comedy. Originally I think Van Helsing was meant to become a multi-film franchise, however they compacted all of the elements into a single story line.
I think Hugh Jackman plays second fiddle to the special effects overkill. When you realise who Van Helsing is himself, no background or explanation is given. As for Kate Beckinsale I guess she did her best, however her accent was terrible, though I’m sure her bank manager won’t be complaining. The guy who plays Dracula just played straight into the stereotype. The one things they did make different is the backbone to the story, which was the fact that Dracula’s brides give birth to dead egg sacks containing bats. Which is mental. since it goes against the accepted lore that preganent vampires give birth to baby vampires, oh well.
