Thinkpad has Landed

Well my thinkpad showed up today, can’t wait to get home to have a proper play with it.

Now all I need to do is go collect the extra memory module from my Post Office since I was not home to recieve it yesterday.

Thinkpad

I have been after a PC laptop for a few weeks since it would be really handy to be able to hack Windows C/C++ code whilst on the train. My main criteria for selecting a laptop has been size. Was considering a Vaio however because of the screen ratios I was put off. The X31 from IBM seems to me to be perfect.
I had toyed with the X30 in the past and sort of knew what I would be getting. So I set about looking on ebay a couple of weeks back, I lost out on a couple of auctions to begin with because the price got way over budget.

Luckly last night I won an auction getting me a X31 with a docking station and 2 years remaining on the IBM warranty. However it does not have an internal Wi-Fi or Bluetooth module, which is okay since I have a spare Wi-Fi card. It only has 256Mb of memory, so I will have to order some more from Crucial and a 30GB drive which should be more than enough.

It should show up in a couple of days, so I will post my finding in a couple of days.

Long time no update

Well not much to report really have been busy with work as per usual. Coming up to a big deadline, so just trying to get everything finished off. What have been upto, well a couple of weeks back I went and saw Aimee Mann at the Shepard’s Bush Empire. That was a good night, other than the usual weekly outings have not been upto much. Not had much time for gaming in the last couple of weeks, got Bomberman on the DS a few weeks back, which has been quite entertaining but I need to find other DS owners to make that more fun. The PSP comes out in a couple of weeks not sure if I’m going to pre-order, the new V2 firmware has a web browser built in so that is quite cool.

The Nokia 6680 is going from strength to strength, Apple have added iSync support so everything syncs very nicely. SMS from the desktop is working as well. On the techy side have been hacking some Python for fun, as well as starting to look at AJAX. Some nice things I can see doing with this for some of the UI’s and I want to webify in the coming months.

A quick summary of movies that I have seen in the last couple of weeks. Wedding Crashers which is the funniest film ever. Fantastic Four which was better than I was expecting. War of the Worlds which was pretty good modernisation of a classic science fiction piece. Want to see Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Stealth and The Descent. All watched a whole batch of new DVDs but none come to mind right now.

Obvious the big news has been the attacks on London, thankfully all of the people I know were not directly effected, though there were a couple of close calls. Right now security in London has been tigthened and things are certainly different. In my mind things could have been worse, only 56 deaths is amazing when you consider that in a confined area like a tunnel could have colapsed. To add insult to injury one of the consequences of this was the wrongful killing of Jean Charles de Menezes by the Police. The second wave of attacks seems to have gone wrong, though I think I will reserve judgement on that until more facts are established.
